TANTRIC ART
The History and Function of Sacred Imagery in Eastern Spiritual Traditions
Learning to Listen
For Westerners who find themselves drawn to Eastern spiritual practices such as hatha yoga, meditation, and chanting, it is essential to also delve into the visual culture of Hinduism and Buddhism. For many, it is the art that first pulls them to these traditions and the images themselves communicate a tremendous amount that cannot be accessed through formal study of scripture. The images, one could say, are an integral part of Eastern spirituality, and this presentation seeks to unfold the value and function of sacred art in Hindu and Buddhist practice.

DARSHAN
On the Worship of Images in Hindu Practice
Yoga Sutra
New York, New York
Darshan can be loosely translated as "auspicious seeing" but is far more complex than simply looking at something. There is a relationship between the subject and the object through which one gains access to profound teachings. In Hinduism, darshan may very well be the most common and important "practice" amongst devotees. The images of deities worshipped throughout the Hindu world have the capacity to serve as mirrors, reflecting one's highest potential. By learning to look at the deities with awareness, the beauty of the gods and goddesses comes to life and reveals
something of great beauty and wonder. Join us as we view some of the finest contemporary Hindu and Buddhist art in the world and consider the importance of viewing sacred art today.

GANESHA UNCENSORED!
Conservative and Provocative Representations of the Lord of New Beginnings
Ashtanga Yoga New York & Sri Ganesha Temple
Lord Ganesha, aside from being one of the most well-loved and honored deities of the Hindu pantheon, is today amongst the world's most recognizable icons. From sacred temples in India to lunchboxes and flashing car ornaments, the Great Remover of Obstacles appears in countless guises, making himself accessible to all who happen upon his curious form. This talk, in conjunction with Ashtanga Yoga New York's festivities celebrating Ganesha's birthday, explores traditional representations and functions of this beloved god in contrast to the modern, "visionary" images that abound today. While the iconography of most other Hindu deities tends to remain the same, Ganesha is a "forward-moving" deity whose symbols and implements are constantly transforming. What do these images say about a changing, modernizing Western Hinduism? And do these visionary interpretations serve a specific function or are traditionalists justified in their criticism of such images? Join us as we explore the perplexing riddle that is Lord Ganesha in the 21st century.

DIVINE FEMININE
Exploring Aspects of the Mother Goddess in Buddhist Art and Practice
Lesbian Buddhist Sanghas of Berkeley and Oakland
Berkeley, California
One must never underestimate the power that art has to reveal teachings and evoke sensations that bring us to the spiritual path. For many Western spiritual seekers, their first introduction to the Dharma is through Buddhist art where some essential quality of Buddhism is communicated in silence and through beauty. When we look at female bodhisattvas it is important to ask what these images communicate about women in society and as practitioners. This talk discusses the power that art has to influence social ideas, particularly through the representation of women in the contemporary art of Buddhism. By invitation only.
